In the rich tapestry of Tibetan astrology, the appearance of the Rishi Star is a profound and auspicious event. This special constellation, known as the Seven Sisters of the Pleiades, is visible from September 9th to 15th/16th each year.

Its influence brings remarkable benefits that are deeply rooted in the natural and spiritual realms. This year, we are graced with the Rishi Star during these seven days, presenting a unique opportunity for profound transformation and rejuvenation.

The Rishi Stars: A Celestial Blessing

According to Tibetan astrology, the Rishi Stars—often identified with the Pleiades constellation—possess special healing powers. Garchen Rinpoche teaches that when these stars are visible in the night sky, their light transforms all natural water sources on Earth into healing nectar and plants into medicine. This period is not only significant from an astrological standpoint but is also celebrated for its tangible benefits to our well-being.

The Sacred Tradition of Bathing

The tradition of bathing during the Rishi Star period has a deep historical root. It is said that this practice began 800 years ago in Tibet during a time of plague, when many animals and people perished. The great Tibetan medicine doctor, Youthok Yonten Gompo, had already passed away, but the Tibetan people prayed to him for guidance and help.

On the first night of the seventh month of the Lunar calendar, the entire community had a shared dream of a bright star above Lhasa and a sick girl bathing in the Lhasa river, emerging as a healthy and beautiful maiden. It was believed that Youthok Yonten Gompo had transformed himself into the star to convey the message that the water had medicinal properties. Following this divine guidance, the people bathed in the river, and after seven days, the plague disappeared, and everyone who bathed had recovered. The new star vanished, having fulfilled its purpose.

Today, Tibetans continue to celebrate this Bathing Festival during the Karma Rishi period. Frequent bathing and drinking lots of water during this time are said to heal the body, mind, and soul.

The Sacred Ritual of Bathing

One of the key practices recommended from September 9th to 15th/16th is to take baths, preferably in natural or sacred water sources if possible. Here’s why this practice is so important:

  1. Purification and Renewal: Bathing during the Rishi Star period is believed to cleanse and purify both the body and mind. The transformed water is said to carry heightened spiritual and healing properties, helping to wash away negative energies and emotional burdens. This purification process can lead to a renewed sense of clarity and balance.

  2. Enhanced Healing Properties: The nectar-like quality of the water during this period is thought to have enhanced healing properties. Taking a bath in such water can invigorate the body, soothe the mind, and support overall health. It is a time when the water's natural essence is at its peak, offering a unique opportunity for physical and spiritual rejuvenation.

  3. Traditional Practices: Traditionally, Tibetan doctors would place buckets of water outside during this time and use this water for making their medicines. You can collect water in buckets and use it for bathing. Any water, whether from the ocean, river, stream, or pool, is imbued with the healing qualities of these stars. Even the water in our own bodies can be purified by exposing oneself to the night sky when the stars are out.

  4. Spiritual Connection: Engaging in the ritual of bathing during the Rishi Star period can also deepen your spiritual practice. The act of immersing yourself in the sacred water serves as a form of devotion and reverence, aligning you with the celestial energies and inviting blessings into your life.

  5. Cultural and Spiritual Significance: The knowledge of the Rishi Stars has a long tradition in Tibetan Buddhism. For example, in The Life of Milarepa, Milarepa’s mother sews seven ounces of gold into a patch on a yogin’s cloak, over which she places a piece of black cloth embroidered with the seven stars of the Pleiades. This story underscores the deep cultural and spiritual significance of these stars.

Practical Tips for the Rishi Star Bathing Ritual

  • Timing: Aim to bathe during the early morning or at dusk to align with the natural rhythms of the day.

  • Water Source: If possible, use natural water sources such as rivers, lakes, or streams. If not accessible, a bath in your home with a focus on mindfulness and intention can also be effective.

  • Intention and Mindfulness: Approach your bath with a clear intention and mindfulness. Visualize the water cleansing and revitalizing you, and take a moment to reflect on the benefits you wish to receive during this period.

Conclusion

The Rishi Star period, from September 9th to 15th this year, offers a rare and precious opportunity to experience the transformative power of celestial influences. By embracing the ritual of bathing during these seven sacred days, you can harness the benefits of the nectar-like water, purify your being, and align yourself with the positive energies of the cosmos. Let this time be a period of profound renewal, healing, and spiritual growth.

Happy Healing during this auspicious time. Embrace the blessings of the Rishi Star and allow its celestial gifts to illuminate your path.
