White Sur Ritual

The White Sur (Tibetan: གསུར་བུམ་, pronounced "Sur Bum") is a Tibetan Buddhist practice to benefit beings in the intermediate state (bardo), as well as animals, spirits and hungry ghosts (pretas). Through offerings of food, fragrance, and prayers, it alleviates suffering, generates merit, and aids beings in finding peace or a positive rebirth.

Key Aspects:

  • PURPOSE: To provide nourishment and relief to beings in the bardo, spirits, and others trapped in suffering, easing their transition with compassion.

  • OFFERINGS: Roasted barley flour (tsampa), butter, and incense are burned to produce fragrant smoke, believed to nourish beings on a subtle level.

  • SPIRITUAL BENEFIT: The ritual pacifies obstacles, removes negativity, and dedicates merit to aid the liberation of sentient beings.

  • CONNECTION TO LOVED ONES: The ritual can be performed with specific dedications for deceased loved ones, offering them support during their transition​.

Sacred Lineage:

The White Sur ritual will be conducted according to the sacred sadhana of the Longchen Nyingthig, a lineage renowned for its luminous clarity and profound blessings for liberation and purification.

How the Ritual is Performed:

  1. PREPARATION: Mindful offerings of roasted barley flour, butter, and incense are consecrated with the mantra of Chenrezig:

    • OM MANI PADME HUM (recited continuously).

  2. VISUALIZATION: The fragrant smoke is visualized as reaching all beings in need—nourishing, comforting, and carrying the blessings of Chenrezig’s infinite compassion.

  3. DEDICATION: The merit generated from this practice is dedicated to all sentient beings, with specific prayers for those in the bardo or otherwise trapped in suffering.
